Morgan didn’t act like a disinterested man. At the polo match the next day he came over to where Suzanna was sitting whenever they had a time-out—or whatever they called them. She never quite figured out what was going on.

“It looks quite dangerous,” she remarked nervously to Paulette. The players were leaning perilously out of their saddles to whack a ball as other horses thundered straight at them.

“There are occasional injuries, but you don’t need to worry about Morgan. He’s an expert rider.”

Suzanna couldn’t help worrying. She was glad when the match was over and a group of them went to a tavern to celebrate. Morgan draped his arm casually around her shoulders as they clustered around the bar, which certainly added to her enjoyment.

He continued to send her mixed messages. There was no doubt about his admiration, and he seemed to enjoy her company, but that was as far as it went

He took her out with his friends, and she discovered they were almost like her friends at home—except wealthier and more glamorous. But in spite of leading lives of privilege, they worked at meaningful jobs.

Suzanna enjoyed everything she did with Morgan, but especially the times when they were alone. On weekend mornings they often played tennis together, just the two of them. She began to look forward to those games.

But one Saturday morning Morgan phoned to postpone their game because of a diplomatic matter. He suggested she wait in his apartment. Hopefully, they could still play a few sets before lunch.

Their tennis date had been for ten-thirty, but as the time dragged on, it seemed unlikely that they’d get to play. Suzanna sighed and sat on the couch to read the book she’d brought. After a while she took off her tennis shoes and tucked her feet under her. But that got uncomfortable, so she stretched out full-length with pillows under her head.

Suzanna drifted off to sleep and dreamed of Morgan. He was standing across a long room with his back to her. She called out to him, but he didn’t hear her. When she tried to raise her voice, he walked out the door.

Suzanna awakened to see Morgan standing over her, looking down at her tenderly.

“It’s all right, darling.” He smoothed her hair gently. “I won’t let anything hurt you.”

She opened her eyes and felt happiness flood through her. “You came back!” she exclaimed.

He sat facing her and put his arms loosely around her waist. “I told you I would. I always keep my promises.”

“No, you don’t understand. I dreamed that you walked away from me without looking back. I knew it was forever. I tried to call to you, but you just kept on going.” She threw her arms around his neck and clung so tightly that her breasts were crushed by his hard chest.

Morgan’s arms tightened reflexively, and he held her for a long moment. Then his embrace loosened reluctantly. “You’re dreaming, Suzanna,” he said. “Wake up.”

“I am awake,” she said softly.

Maybe the dream made
